Spiritual awakening is a painful process. The deep darkness and suffering seems to be a never ending stage. In one of my previous posts I talked about how this feels very much like a depression . At times the pain seems unbearable, yet life must go on. Trying to run away from the pain is not the goal here and it should be avoided. Finding ways to embrace and deal with the negative feelings and emotions can lessen the spiritual awakening pain.

is aligned with your own Being and the Universe. It sounds very painful and it is. When the process begins, confusion is one of the first emotions associated with it. Disorientation, disconnection, and fear follow shortly after as the person and the world we spent our entire life building in our minds starts to disintegrate and disappear. You feel like your world is on fire. At this stage, we try desperately to find some logical explanation as to what is happening to us and our world. We try to talk to our family and friends, but usually they have not gone through this process so they are not able to understand nor provide any help. One of the hardest things for me was watching everyone else’s lives go on as usual, with the normal ups and downs, while mine was literally falling apart.

One of the first things that you can do to ease the spiritual pain is to do some research and to get to a point where you understand what is happening. Your life will continue to fall apart, you will continue to feel very uncomfortable but at the very least you will understand the reason for it. No one’s spiritual awakening journey is the same but there are some common components. Learning this will ease off the pain and discomfort as you will know what to expect going forward.

You might be asking yourself, what is a spiritual awakening for? Researching the spiritual awakening journeys of others will provide some relief, but this is a very individual process and no two journeys will be the same. Learning to trust that you are ready and to trust the process will eliminate a lot of resistance, pain and suffering. There will be dark days when you will feel that you can’t go on, this is the time when practicing faith will be the only light that you can see. Having a deep belief that this is not just happening to you but at some deep level you have asked for it. If you are going through the spiritual awakening process, you must have noticed that there must be more to the world that you seem to be living in.

Connect With Others

At this point, most likely, you have tied talking to some people close to you. You have realized that, as much as they want to understand what you are going through, they are not able to. This is not their fault. Everyone is at a different stage in their lives. However, that realization leaves you feeling lonely, confused, and disconnected.

You can try going through this process alone. For me, I researched communities, YouTube channels, chats, and other mediums of reaching people around the world that are going through this process. This is your journey, and no one can do it for you. However, reading about other people experience and coping methods helped me feel less lonely.

Quiet your mind
Quiet Your Mind

Many people get intimidated with the word, but what mediation simply means is to set some time apart and just close your eyes and sit quietly. Seems very simple, but if you are just starting to meditate, it is the farthest from simple and easy. The second you sit down with the intention of being quiet and watching your thoughts, your mind goes crazy. All of a sudden you start having a million thoughts coming at you. That’s not everything, your body doesn’t not like the inactivity either. All of a sudden, different parts start itching, you get cold, you get hot, you get uncomfortable, and all of a sudden you think of a million things that you should and want to be doing instead of meditating.

This is normal, just sit quietly and observe your mind and feel your body. With time this will subside and you will find a quiet, joyful place in your mind. You will find a place where you feel a deep connection to everything. Being persistent and not getting discouraged is crucial for this to happen.

The Big Picture

The hardest part is that at this stage you do not know what the final result is supposed to be. The old you is breaking apart, but the new you have not formed yet and you are not able to comprehend what that final version will be like. It’s very difficult going through this painful processes not knowing what to look forward to.

There is no other way but to leave your mind totally open as to what the new version of you and the world around you will look like. Instead of trying to imagine specific images, try concentrating on the feelings that you would like to feel. Ask yourself, what is it that I want to be feeling. This is what I focused on:

Spiritual awakening pain is inevitable. Trying to avoid or eliminate the pain will only prolong the journey. However, there are some things we can do to help us embrace the process and deal with the uncomfortable and painful feelings that will definitely come up.
